You don't have to "do math" anything beyond dividing by 2. If you start
with C it's even easier, since Middle C (a 2' organ pipe) is
conventionally 256.

A = 440 is a very recent standard.
The recent recordings of Stölzel's (contemporary of J. S. Bach) recently
rediscovered masterpieces use A = 392.
