From 1961 to 1966 I went to USA Army Reserve two week summer
camp sessions for training.

I was in charge of hot water for my barracks because I was one of
the few people who had experience with burning anthracite coal in
hand fired water heaters. The coal was stored in outdoor bins and
"weathered" so that there was a lot of coal dust mixed with the
coal lumps in the bin. Dust is the enemy of a hand fired coal
burning device because the air needed for combustion needs to get
through the fuel bed -- dust blocks the air circulation.

I made a screen from 1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth, stapled 3/4
inch by 1 inch by 2 inch by three feet wooden supports on two
sides, rolled it up and took it to camp in my duffel bag. It let
me remove the dust and took up essentially no room in a duffel bag.

If you can live with galvanized steel wire for your screen, then
all you need is a hardware store to buy the hardware cloth and a
lumber yard to buy wood for the two end pieces.
