Hmmm... From "Booknews", as quoted on the Barnes & Noble site with respect
to the book "Erikson Esquimos, and Columbus": A mathematician and computer
consultant who explores the history of cartography, Enterline treats the
medieval maps and documents relating to the western hemisphere as artifacts,
and subjects them to the inductive methods of archaeology. He sees his work
as part of the new field of cognitive archaeology. Annotation c. Book News,
Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
I can't seem to find too much more beyond that with respect to academic
qualifications for James Enterline. Dr. Towe is a mineralogist.
James Enterline is interested in selling books. Perhaps Dr. Towe is also,
but he also has a reputation and a creditability in his profession (actually
two scientific fields) that he puts on the line when he writes something and
sends it out into the public.
But my point is simpler than that, really. Dr. Towe has no reason to
misrepresent what he was told by Enterline, and I would think that
sufficient legal reason exists to avoid doing so. On the other hand, if you
ask someone the wrong questions in a private correspondence, you will often
get back precisely the answer that your correspondent believes that you want
to hear.
