Apparently the stone was already in much that shape to begin with. The motives for the message is a complete mystery and in any case we do not actually know that it was carved on the run. The tree seems to have existed, irrespective of anything it may or may not do for the credibility of the KRS.
The following is old news perhaps. It's about Larsson's runes being late 1800s used by trademen as a secret code rather than medieval ones.

At first sight the Larsson runes are identical but close examination apparently shows they are not. I understand that Nielsen thinks they are related but not an exact inspiration.
