The following is old news perhaps. It's about Larsson's runes being late 1800s used by trademen as a secret code rather than medieval ones.

At first sight the Larsson runes are identical but close examination apparently shows they are not. I understand that Nielsen thinks they are related but not an exact inspiration.

That paper represents the pre-Larsson era. Its a good try, but not good enough, and totally demolished by the Larsson runes.
