Balls. The Masons as known today came into being in the eighteenth century. They have *no* organic links with the medieval stonemasons, the Knights Templar or my illustrious ancestor Fred Edwards the fishmonger. The fact that they subsequently made up such connections, along with relevant degrees and rituals, is beside the point. After all, the Roman bishopric thinks it was instituted by a failed Judean rebel.
The really interesting thing is how the Franciscan Order could have existed before Saint Francis. I suppose we'll have to wait and judge the evidence before we dismiss the idea.
