4ax.com,
You don't seem to know that the Ohman land consisted of
hills rising
from an existing swamp. Why else do you think they called
it
'Runestone Hill'?
Because there was a runestone found, allegedly
Runestone hill rises from flat land with adjacent lakes. Along the lakes are bogs in some areas, the general area of the runestone is characterized by isolated lakes, some of which have been dried up. The land itself was elevated with regard to the red river.
[Here's how we do it, Eric]

... and here is how I do it http://tinyurl.com/cmf7c
(Close the advertisement if it pops up in the middle of everything). Note that the water levels are modern and lower than the 19th century levels which are now being restored by the construction of dams.
Please observe that when there was a lake and not a swamp around the Runestone Hill, which wasn't as long ago as some of you think, it didn't take much to have that lake emptied out. Start by looking at this url, a redirected view of the url Eric sent + added information http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm?lat=45.81111&lon=-95.6700408 &scale=24000&zoom=100&type=1&height=498&width=498&icon=0&searchscope=dom&CFI D=3501781&CFTOKEN=68274516&scriptfile=http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/ index.cfm&bpid=MAP0060030900%2C1%2C1%2C0&latlontype=DMS
For the love of God! Use shorter url-makers! Like this:

Now while it's less then 44 ft eviation between the highest point = Runesone Hill and the lakes west and east of the Hill, you also can see that it took less than 10ft change with or without landrise over time to empty the lake with the impact of large swamps around and two small lakes west-south-west of the Runestone hill. This is the area you have to look at. Not only for changes after the draination started and for what will be when the area is restored. You will also have to realise that landrise is a retarding movement and while it's close to none today it still was rising two hundred years ago in the area northeast of the Runestone Hill, which means that you will get a better view of how the area looked like 700 years ago if you follow 1370 or 1380 'line' on the map. That's not entirely correct but will give you a better understanding of the past's terrain then present days' maps but also better understanding than if you were looking on 1880's maps.
And that would make it even more the case that the Kensington area was not drained by the Red River system. IOW, not lots of help for a band on the run who'd been navigating the Red.
