I have a better one. There was a pentacylindrical shell that acreted
mud and calcium, then a 5000 ton lamprey shoved into the side of a
volcanic uplift where it was surrounded by igneous lava which then
solidified and further up lifted. Over time the acidic rain ate away
the carbonate exoskeleton leaving the star shaped object.
A variation of this is that during early evolution there were
creatures that lived in lava domes and this one got trapped in lava
only later to erode.
Another variation is that it was a landing strut for drunken space
aliens, who unfortunately landed their craft on a lava flow, since it
was made of aluminum it melted as the lava cooled leaving the
impression.
