Much ado about nothing

The weekend before last I got to help excavate a shell midden on San
Nicolas Island (California). We got to the unit and cleaned it out - it
had been covered but not filled in by last year's crew - and almost
immediately reached the bottom of the cultural material. We kept going a
bit farther then augered down another 130 cm, but found nothing but
sterile dirt. So we made drawings, took pictures, and filled the whole
thing in. Which left just enough time to lay the string on another unit
before we had to leave <sigh>.
Oh, well. We've still got two more trips out there this semester, and at
least I got some lab experience helping the other teams sort drek.
