Llamas are being bred in the UK. A TV program showed them being put

That is not really a fair comparison. War Horses tend to be far more
expensive than riding animals because of the training required.
Valuations done during the Hundred Years war (the Crown was required
to replace horses lost on campaign and valued them at the start) give
IIRC about 12s for a nag and up to 40 pounds stirling for a fully
trained War horse. The other problem is providing fodder for the
animals.
