TV Documentary on the Celts

On Saturday 18 February there was an interesting documentary on the
Celts on the British TV Channel 4.

Much of it covered matters which were discussed recently in this Group
so I will confine my comments to two issues.

A bog body was found in Lindow Bog, England and dated for the period 50
to 100 A D, just after the Romans had invaded and were in the process
of occupying most of Britain. The programmers suggested that it was a
ritual killing like the Irish bog bodies and that it may have been an
attempt to propitiate the gods and to help them defeat the Romans.

They referred to contacts between Celts in Germany and Greece and to
the Gauls who sacked the Roman Republic ca 350 B C and to their final
defeat by Julius Caesar.

In between wars there was trade beween the Celts and the Greeks and
Romans. They imported a lot of wine and shocked their suppliers by
always drinking it neat. The Greeks and Romans would normally add
water.

It seems that little has changed at least in drinking habits. Many
Northern Europeans "binge" drink and adding water to wine is a practice
I have never come across in Ireland, Britain, and other Northern
European Countries except France.

It seems that moderate drinking of diluted wine with a meal is still
quite common in Romance countries.
