Alan,
it's not only a theory out of the blue. I suggest
utgiven avto
read
"Pehr Kalms
brev till samtida. " 2 volumes,
and
"Pehr Kalms Resa till Norra Amerika / å nyo
this?agreeFredr.
Elfving och
Georg Schauman
Helsingfors, edited 1904-1929, 4 volumes"
I am pretty sure that if you read those you would
that
it's the only
possible theory.
So why didn't the editors Roos and Kogerus notice
answerThey
meantmust have slept through their work. Is that what you
Februaryby
"without editor's hand on" when you wrote this in
last
year:
"It's in volume 4. I sent the ISBN number in an

tk.
here it is once more: 951-9018-43-3 editor svenska
litteratursällskapet i Finland, edited
Helsingfors 1988. The full journal of volume 4
forKrogerus ineditor's
hand on has been edited by John E Roos and Harry
1988. I am sorry but I don't have the ISBN number
ISBNthat
work"
That's a confusing message, because you quoted the
it'sof
the
book and then said you didn't have the ISBN. But
Schaumaneasy
versionto
get lost in this jungle, as I have done. Why did the
of
"Resa till Norra Amerika" reissued by Elfving &
volumereasonhave
four volumes when the first edition had only three?
The question you ask is the one I asked myself and the
why I looked
into the Resa till Norra Amerika edited the last
en1929(tillägg i
enlighet med Kalms egna noteringar i olika brev. även
tobok
utgiven i
Åtvidaberg med privata brev som inte finns i den ref.brevsamlingen pekar
mot detta).
Thanks, it's becoming slightly clearer now. Thanks also
handPeter
Alaca for the additional info.
My own reflection after reading them all was and is,
observe here is a theory, that the examplar of Kalm's
go-betweenwe
discuss here,
called dairy/journal, in reality not only is a
the byfrom
the first
diary to the manuscript for 4th volume,
but might be a copy of the manuscript 'lost'.
Reason for this is the same as I refered to before,
thatrememberKalm numbered
pages including blank numbered pages,
AND the fact that Kalm in one of the letters, don't
which for the
moment since I don't have that book at home, hinted
theythe
supposed'Amercian'
elk/moose text which Kalm copied from PhilosophicalTransactions and some
other parts added in the 4th volume edited 1988 were
findingto be inside
the text.
Well, I still don't believe your theory. I know you like
lost manuscripts, but I still believe the experts when
volumesay
thatthat the manuscript for volume 4 of the BOOK was lost in
fire. Let's be content with what we have, the fourth
beenof
the JOURNAL, which contains the material that must have
Andin
the lost manuscript of the book, albeit in rougher form.
editionthis material is already incorporated in the English
history, and amisunderstood byfrom 1937.
Well most of what I discuss isn't at all or is completely
the translator.
That's a very serious accusation against a dead colleague of
mine. Can you cite specific examples of his complete
misunderstanding?
Are we talking about same two editions?
I am talking about:
Kalm Pehr, Travels into North America, containing its natural
circumstantial account of its plantations and agriculture ingeneral, with
the civil, ecclesiastical and commercial state of the country, the manners
of the inhabitants... : Transl. into English by John ReinholdForster;
Warrington 1770version of
and
Kalm Pehr, Peter Kalm's travels in North America : the English
1770 / revised from the original Swedish and edited by AdolphB. Benson
New York 1937
Yes, that's the one I mean, the revised edition of 1937 which,
as you know from Peter Alaca's helpful reference, includes "the
diary notes for this unpublished part ... now offered in English
for the first time"
It would surprise me if Adolph B. Benson (1881-1962) was as
incompetent as you claim. He was a serious scholar in
Scandinavian-American studies, with an impressive list of books
in the LIBRIS catalogue. In 1914 he became instructor in German
and Scandinavian at Yale and he later became assistant
professor. His special subjects were literature and early
Swedish travels in and emigration to America. Can you give a few
examples of his complete misunderstandings?
