That's a confusing message, because you quoted the
ISBN
of
the
book and then said you didn't have the ISBN. But
it's
easy
to
get lost in this jungle, as I have done. Why did the
version
of
"Resa till Norra Amerika" reissued by Elfving &
Schauman
have
four volumes when the first edition had only three?

The question you ask is the one I asked myself and the
reason
why I looked
into the Resa till Norra Amerika edited the last
volume
1929(tillägg i
enlighet med Kalms egna noteringar i olika brev. även
en
bok
utgiven i
Åtvidaberg med privata brev som inte finns i den ref.

My own reflection after reading them all was and is,
observe here is a theory, that the examplar of Kalm's
hand
we
discuss here,
called dairy/journal, in reality not only is a
go-between
from
the first
diary to the manuscript for 4th volume,
but might be a copy of the manuscript 'lost'.
Reason for this is the same as I refered to before,
the by
Kalm numbered
pages including blank numbered pages,
AND the fact that Kalm in one of the letters, don't
remember
which for the
moment since I don't have that book at home, hinted
that
the
'Amercian'
elk/moose text which Kalm copied from Philosophical
Transactions and some
other parts added in the 4th volume edited 1988 were
supposed
to be inside
the text.

Well, I still don't believe your theory. I know you like
finding
lost manuscripts, but I still believe the experts when
they
say
that the manuscript for volume 4 of the BOOK was lost in
that
fire. Let's be content with what we have, the fourth
volume
of
the JOURNAL, which contains the material that must have
been
in
the lost manuscript of the book, albeit in rougher form.
And
this material is already incorporated in the English
edition
from 1937.

Well most of what I discuss isn't at all or is completely
misunderstood by
the translator.


That's a very serious accusation against a dead colleague of
mine. Can you cite specific examples of his complete
misunderstanding?

B. Benson
New York 1937

Yes, that's the one I mean, the revised edition of 1937 which,
as you know from Peter Alaca's helpful reference, includes "the
diary notes for this unpublished part ... now offered in English
for the first time"

It would surprise me if Adolph B. Benson (1881-1962) was as
incompetent as you claim. He was a serious scholar in
Scandinavian-American studies, with an impressive list of books
in the LIBRIS catalogue. In 1914 he became instructor in German
and Scandinavian at Yale and he later became assistant
professor. His special subjects were literature and early
Swedish travels in and emigration to America. Can you give a few
examples of his complete misunderstandings?
