It is not archaeology.
But there is archaeology in that very broadly defined area and the
possible presence of the norse should not be forgotten in that
regard.
The Hauksbok is not the only source which hints at the possible
norse presence in the vicinity of carolina.
1. What other source(s) hint at this?
http://www.northvegr.org/lore/precolumbian/001.php
" Biarne Grimolfson was driven with his ship into the Irish ocean,
and they came into a worm sea, (140) and soon the ship began to
sink under them. They had a boat which was smeared with sea oil,
for the worms do not attack that. "
Very unlikely that they started to sink because
they came in a "worm sea"
That's what the story said.
The worms being referred to are Teredo which are common south of 30
degrees north latitude but elsewhere are found only in the warm waters
of the Gulf Stream.
Shipworms (Teredo/Psiloteredo) are not restricted
to warm waters.Three species (norvegica, navalis
and megotaura) are common around the North Sea
and Baltic. It is thought that T. navalis was imported
with ships from Asia in the 18th century.
You seem to be right. There are many species of shipworms in the
colder waters but they don't seem to be so active.
See http://tinyurl.com/nuzm4 for the flow of the
Gulf Stream. Note the way it separates from the coast of North America
at Cape Hatteras. For the norse to be sufficiently familiar with
Teredo to know that 'sea oil' (whale/walrus/seal tar) kept them at bay
suggests that they had spent some time south of Caper Hatteras i.e.
off the coast of Carolina.
See above. And the quote says that the oil didn't work.
Are you sure? That would be contrary to experience. The 'boat'
referred to was carried on board the larger and wormy boat.
