Here are some links about the excavation at Varnhem.

Varnhem was a cistercian monastery founded in 1150. Many of those
founded in Sweden (not that there were so many in total) were located
on excellent estates, and the monks arrived at a place that already
had a stone church.

It is this church that is being excavated. Beneath it there was an
older wooden church.

In this link you can find pictures and words from the archaeologists.

Here's a newspaper article.

The archaeologists think that once the monastery was up and running,
the older church was rebuilt into a house for guests and travellers.
Most of the finds are leftovers from meals =)

Here are two links to churches that were built around the time of that
being excavated.

Of course they have been rebuilt many times, but if you imagine them
without weapon-house and sacristy, I think you will have something
that resembles the excavated church.

Im am glad that I know enough Swedish to
understand more or less what it is all about,
but I am sure for most readers here it is
meaningless.
