As anyone working in public archaeology can
tell you, there is a persistent rumor that there
is evidence--suppressed evidence of course--
that the Native American mounds of Wisconsin,
Minnesota, and Iowa were built by Vikings.

Hopefully, these days, the archaeologists who recovered the skull from
the mound would have identified the evidence of relatively recent
disturbance of the mound where the horse skull was found. Is it to be
expected that the tampering should have been identified when the site
was excavated in 1935?

When I raise this question, I'm not arguing that the horse skull had
been left by the Vikings. The identification of the horse as a Western
Mustang seems to nail that possibility on the head. My question
relates mostly to archaeological practices.

However, apart from that, in the matter of 'mooring stones', watch
this space but don't hold your breath.

If I may assume that the Wisconsin archaeologists
knew their trade, they certainly should have noticed
the disturbance. I am amazed that they didn't.
