Re: Neolithic NW Europe: Summary?

That would leave us with the early Neos as some sort of outcasts of
society, at least parts of them and seen from the perspective of the
Mesos. The Neos developed a different view, and succeeded for the next
couple of thousand years.

But in some bronze age societies being a farmer put you on
the bottom of the totem pole.

I would argue the neolithization in areas were little
displacement is evident resulted in a reorganization of
mesolithic peoples and eventually left them either with
maritime occupations or pastoral traditions as an exception
to neolithization until neolithization was complete.

Deer need woodlands for shelter and child rearing, but
at night they feed in meadows and grasslands, and in the
evening it is quite common to see deer feeding amoung
cows in the feilds, particularly in spring time. As long
as there is a wooded areas within a few hundred feet
which they can run to. Where I lived we used to have deer feeding
in the yard at night, I used to ride my bike in the evening
and one group of white tailed deer crossed from a light
use ranch across a fence to another wooded area and then
down a hill and across another road and fence to a feild were
you could spot them feeding often in the evening.
One could watch the spectacle if one was lucky and
the deer running from plot to plot in an almost maniacal
fashion charging across fence lines at 15 to 20 MPH
as if the had the path memorized.
The wild boar, they tend to be more shy and will stick
to the woodlands until wee hours of the morning. They
tend to wait until deer are feeding and then move
in after the deer. However the ferral hog population
in the brush country has been quite successful. Their
shyness is innate since they have no natural predators
in texas (except a few sites in the north and east
that have reported an influx of cougars, the coyotes
and absense of wolves is not a threat). The West
Texas ferral hogs have adapted by moving in herds
with very large adults (apex predators in the ecosystem)
and they tend to devour anything edible on the
ground in their paths (this includes another top level
predator, the rattlesnake). These are after all european
derived wild boar (<500 years in the west) and they
have managed to adapt to several habitats. I have a
friend who hunts West Texas ferrels and he has had
some difficulty killing them with high power rifles
The older males tend to have very tough skulls and
they can live for a considerable period after
experiencing a fatal wound. The pigs often run in
the direction of the shooter in attempt to defend
themselves and so hunting in blinds is the only
way to defend oneself. Typically one can get a
maximum of two high velocity shots off before
a retreat is neccesary. Alteration of the wood
lands may have altered the foraging strategy
of boar and potentially made them more dangerous
to hunt relative to fractured herds in forest.
Cattle move into woodlands in the heat of the day
and chew their cud and essentially rest, they like
feeding in the morning and evening and often rest in
open woodlands at night frequently in an upright
position. Oaks are favored trees by cattle because
they are durable savanah trees that provide a dense
light coverage in the daytime. And it is very common
to see a dozen or so cows knuckle down under a big
ole live oak tree giving off the appearance of a trees
shadow from a distance.
