Re: The Last of the Neanderthals

I wrote....

My interest is in the pre-Roman Germanic incursions into Eastern England.
According to Oppenheimer this is no more than a third of the gene flow
which is not too far distant from Sykes. But the book gives the impression
that it was greater and I am going to reread the relevant sections and
diagrams in the book later today to see if I can resolve it in my mind.

I found the diagram I wanted. The Pre-Roman Germanic gene flow into Eastern
England was no more than that from the Vikings/Danes/AngloSaxons. Which
leaves the argument for a Germanic language being spoken in England at that
time up in the air, though it is an arrtractive solution to the language
problem re Celtic etc.

So what we see is invasion by elites on top of the Iberian founder
population. With highest impact on the East of the British Isles and least
in the West eg Ireland. A simple picture. But much remains to be explained
re language and culture.
