Thus he must have had information between 1047 AD and 1053 AD. We do
timethat Harald Hårdråde during 1050 AD burnt Hedeby and attacked Skåne. We
don't know when he visited the Oslo area or Ringerike close by. At that
foundedRingerike were larger than it is today. we also know that Oslo was
Greenlandthat year. It wouldn't be surprising if delegates from Iceland and
interesttravelled to Hamburg-Bremen via Oslo area. They would have had an
participating when Oslo was founded.
While the city of Oslo undeniably celebrated the 900th anniversary of
its founding in 1950, as some here may remember, it was only 50 years
later that it celebrated its millenium anniversary, based on new
research, which some here may have missed. Googling up the details of
this esoteric fact is left as an exercise for the reader.
While I have seen articles trying to prove 1000 AD as a founding year for
Oslo, I haven't seen anything in written documentation saying that Oslo
could be proved to have it's what we in Sweden calls 'Stadsrättigheter' or
grants for being a town for merchandising before 1050 AD. Oslo seems to have
been a very very small village before 1050 AD. Thus one can wonder which
year that's the right year for foundation? The year that can be proved to be
a town or the year when more than two household can be proven to have at
place.
For those who believe the later alternative to be the correct year, then I
strongly suggest to compare with for example Gothenburg which undoubtly had
more than one town with creditive papers on it's land same land where
Gothenburg was 'founded' in 17th century by Gustav II Adolf.
If it's the name that goes with to be a correct year, please compare with
Linköping who from beginning had the name Liunga kauping where Liunga is
thought not to have it modern word as 'Lin' but as 'Ljung'. I could go over
a lot of examples to show that while 1000 AD by many scholars today are
thought to be correct, the documentation for Oslo being a town in 1000 AD
aren't overwelmning. I stick to 1050 AD since that year has been treated
same way as for example Lund, Linköping and many other towns of today.
