I dont see nearly enough to sort it out. Gibbon mentions how Celts did
human sacrifice, and this is sometimes even voluntary. Its one of the
strategies tribes that suffer famine or calamity have to propitiate
angry gods.
I look forward to an extensive analysis of the Y chromosome
distribution in Europe which should sort out some of the myth. You
mention Iberians coming to Ireland. One of things that happened is
that new diseases get introduced. The DNA record will reveal, but so
far as I can tell now, the Native Europeans were the most widely
traveled of all early hominids, and as a result, most widely exposed
to pathogens, and developed the strongest immune systems. Which is
part of the argument in Diamond's "Guns, Germs, & Steel".
