Aah - but it's in the historical record.

Very inventive spin.

I used to believe it too, and used it in my clases, but then I
discovered/realized that the so-called "linguistic boundaries"
which prevented discourse across ethnic boundaries did not exist--e.g.
that in most cases, a number of people on each side of an
"ethnic" are bi-lingual --e.g. they gain "power" as "culture brokers"
as middle men from one to another.

Bi-Lingual would be an overstatement, I guess.
Pidgin-speakers would be a better term.
One party learns what "How much is" means.
The second party learns that meal means "chow-chow".
Result : "How much is chow-chow ?"
Both aren't there to learn the language; they want to make a profit.

I have loked for but cannot find a *real* case of 'silent trade.'

Yep.
Especially, since two cultures with different values for the same
items (sea-shells valuable in the one, while gold is priced in the
other) would never reach a silent agreement.
One trading-partner would feel ripped of; that usually leads to violence
....

It's easy, put your stuff on the ground, and wait for the other guy to put
his stuff next to yours. If you like what he offered, you take it, if not,
you leave your goods, so he can add to his. If you are not satisfied, you
divide your goods or take back the whole lot. The other trader should not
take any of your stuff until you have removed his goods, agreeing to the
trade.

The problems are with buying for credit, transportation etc, not with the
trading itself.

have fun
