It is clear that anomalous archaeology must be approached carefully on
sci.arch
because mainstream, professional archaeologists object.

The objection is nearly always to the sloppy nature of the work and/or the rosy over-interpretation of the material in favor of the investigator's pre-existing mindset.

Too, most often the enthusiast has not done their homework on the known history and archaeology of the area in question, and is therefore apt to make errors s/he would not make if s/he had educated him/herself.

That said, amateur archaeologists are vital to the field, and the best ones know as much as, and often more than, professional archaeologists about their area or specialty. All decent professional archaeologists consult local amateurs on a regular basis.
