I certainly considered the possibility
that the dating could be in
error but made no comment for the simple
reason that insufficient
information was given. The dating seems
to fall in an era of some
uncertainty in the calibration curve and
the true age could in fact
well turn out to more than a century
older. I am doubtful of this
though as the present dating fits
reasonably well with what is
presently known of polynesian
exploration.

Perhaps a nice shiny Spanish coin from a
sealed context about two
centimetres higher up in the stratigraphic
sequence than the chicken bone
might help to resolve things! Until then
I'll keep a healthy scepticism
whilst resisting the urge to cry fowl.

Maybe the chicken swallowed the coin?
