Was Harvard Prof. Josiah Royce, correct in saying California was named
in the 15th century (see document below web page)?
I see no reason to pay any attention to what a 19th century philosophy
professor says on that issue. I suggest you look elsewhere.
With the usual caveats about Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_the_name_California
(Wikipedia is a good starting point so long as you are willing to follow
up on the references and not just accept what it says. But I would say
that the 15th century is too early to name California. Perhaps you mean
16th century.
Is it the namesake
of Califia, an African Queen in gold-laden Baja as a 15th century
Spanish novel of the day proclaims? We can never know for certain if
she was myth or real.
But we have no reason to think she was real. She shows up in a 16th
century novel (1510), but she is accepted as a myth.
Even this black news site (from a cache) admits that;

But, do we have enough evidence to determine if
an African woman could have been queen in 15th century Baja,
California? With the abundant archeological evidence relevant to the
issue, probably so. Did you know that a mural (on web page) of her is
found at Disney's California Adventure. Or that a mural of her adorns
the wall of the Senate Budget Committee Hearing Room in the California
State Capitol in Sacramento? History is full of secrets.

Please use the email at the web-page bottom with your suggestions or
advice as your comments are important and it's easier save them that
way. Thank you.
Nope, you can save them from here.
Those secrets of yours aren't secrets and you don't know that much about
the portrayal of her myth or you would have mentioned more about Disney.
Please find out what '15th century' means. Hint, it doesn't mean anything
after 1499.
