A short note in the July issue of Scientific American, p.8, 2007,
relates the results of a CT-scan of Oetzi, the 5300yo Bronze age man
who was found in a small ice pod in the Alps on the Austrian-Italian
border. The study was performed by a Swiss-Italian team. It was known
that an arrow head is embedded in the flesh, but it was not known
whether that arrow caused the fatal wound. It can happen that such
items may remain in a body without causing permanent harm. Now it has
been found that the arrow damaged the wall of an artery. The artery it
bulged, which is commonly due to physical damage, and there is
evidence of a hematom. It appears that Oetzi lost a lot of blood and
probably bled to death quickly after being shot.

(Which implies that he was not shot down in the valley, but he was
chased all the way up into the mountains, and the assault took place
right there.)

Where he died does not interest me nearly so much as where, and how,
he lived. the Arsenic in his body and hair prolly came from
Chalcocite>mined in the Transylvanian mtns. There was a disastrous
fish kill in the Danube a few years back you may recall from the arsenic
in mine tailings.

I haven't heard about arsenic, but the origin of the copper can be
found out if it wasn't made from recycled stuff. Most likely source is
the region south of Salzburg though.

I don't have the source for this any more, but I have seen a note that
the geochemical composition of Oetzi's tooth enamel indicates he grew
up in the upper Eisack Valley between Pfitsch/Vipiteno and
Bozen/Bolzano. That makes him a local guy.
