Thanks for the replies.
The allotment is on land which used to belong to a country estate,
although the surrounding area is London suburbs. I would say this land
was farmed and then turned over to allotments, and would never have
been filled. There's loads of this type of flint round here, so it's
probably local.
Which bit of London are you in? I'd be interested to know if your allotment
lies on top of clay with flint as I shouldn't imagine you'd be anywhere near
chalk. It would also be useful to hear if you are anywhere near any known
prehistoric sites.
