Ancient history generally, for 2 centuries after 1607.

Antiquity -

oral tradition
monuments
written manuscripts

"Modern archaeology, relying mainly on discoveries made
by excavating the ruins of former human habitations and
other traces left by ancient peoples, grew out of the
groundwork of these early students of ancient manuscripts."

There are two main problems involved in Barry Fell case:
* he had same tendency as many here to start his studies and conclusions
using an unproven assumption as if it was a fact AND from there on
continuing with a circle-proof. That combination neither is suitable nor in
line of theories of Science.
* He was a Professor of zoologi,

Marine Biology actually. Same point though.

not of History or Archaeology. Nor of
Epigraphy.... He could have been good in History and/or Archaeology anyhow,
but since he doesn't seem to have had any kind of background for either and
absolutely not for Epigraphy with exception for his study of Polynesian
petroglyphs, it's hard to say that his words is something to lean to without
new facts or factors to strengthen up. [For all I know, he might have been
right. But I doubt it in most cases due to lack of other factors and facts]
