Supermarket giant Tesco is planning to open a Mega-depot warehouse
near Stonehenge
Hardly!! Andover is over ten miles from Stonehenge!
But adding even more 40-ton lorries to the single-carriageway A303 isn't a
good move.
Andover is probably cheaper to build in than places with proper existing
motorway access, which is where huge warehouses ought to be (if there are
genuine compelling reasons for using lorries instead of trains or boats, of
course). I can't say that adding a huge warehouse to Andover will do any
harm to Andover itself, from what little I've seen of the place as I've
queued up to get through it or past it on the way elsewhere.
Perhaps someone is hoping that adding Tesco's traffic to the existing
congestion will revive plans to upgrade the A303 to dual carriageway all
the way from the M3 to the M5 despite the ancient beautiful and sacred
landscape in the way?
That is what Tesco PLC's hoping (banking on), Whiskers, but only to
just west of Winterbourne Stoke.
That stretch is already dualled from the M3, around the Andover by-pass,
and to within a mile of Stonehenge; from there to the next stretch of
dualling near Winterbourne Stoke is the 5 mile stretch passing Stonehenge.
The only substantial length of single carriageway on that route now, is
the part from South Petherton (50 miles from Stonehenge) to the end of the
A303 and along the A30 to Honiton - and that and the Salisbury Plain single
carriageway stretches are all that's left of what used to be a gentle
picturesque drive all the way from Andover to Exeter. (I'm too young to
remember the part between London and Andover being anything but grim). Sad
that most of it has already been lost in the race for speed, in the space
of about 20 years, and despite the M4/M5 route which is quicker (albeit
longer in miles) for anyone in a real hurry between London and Exeter.
My grandparents used to take two or three days to get from London to
Cornwall by car, back in the '20s; people in a hurry took the train (and
so did the goods traffic - good views of 'The Vale of the White Horse' and
other interesting monuments from the railway).

Couldn't see anything there about Andover or Hampshire or warehouses or
the A303.
