The guy who first put the story out about it later admitted that he had made it up. The entire premise of hiding or protecting or whatever ignores the very obvious. You do not travel through the most hostile territory to do any of the above. You go away from it.
So if you want to find the Holy Grail look in India. I have this book in preparation...
Seriously, the crux of the story is the myth preceding the fact. There is an escape before the need to escape. And if they do it is in the wrong direction.
