at least put forward this hypotes over the ice via Alaska to Greenland back

Why did they have to travel "over the ice"?
Could they not have crossed open water in summer using boats?
Couldn't they have crossed dry land in summer instead waiting for
winter to deposit ice on top?
Where was this ice that they "must" have crossed, please?
