It's honestly not a gray issue. Top-posting (and not trimming) *is*
poor netiquette.

The thread, at least this sub-thread, did drift away from the topic,
and I did *mean* to change the subject header to indicate as much, but
I failed to do so, and for that I sincerely apologize.

Agreed. However, two salient points: By demonstrating proper posting
technique, his message has a greater opportunity to be seen and read.
In the universe called Usenet, there are people who will not even
bother to read improperly or poorly formatted postings. Just as some
folks will reject any HTML formatted email.
Now, this may strike you as incidental and collateral to the topic, and
I'll concede that that argument has some merit, the larger point is
that screaming help in a smoke-filled room in sign language won't get
you very far will it?
As for Starlord's issue, I have to side with Mr. Wheeler here. At least
insofar as the fact that there does not appear to be an issue, at least
from my read of events.
Merchant doesn't want him on the sidewalk near his establishment.
Merchant contacts police. Police arrive and evidently can find no
reason for a summons, no law being broken, no violation of any kind.
So, I ask, what remains?
Dennis is now off on some kind of quixotic campaign, but to what end?
The battle is lost, Dennis has already won.
Will Mr. Merchant accept the loss and move on? I don't know, but issues
of this type are often best addressed by one of two means:
Rapprochement between the parties or by just letting sleeping dogs (or
cats) lie. It seems to me that encouraging further action on Dennis'
part is poor counsel.
We can all appreciate and empathize with Dennis. Anyone here who knows
of his efforts and circumstances can feel great empathy and be desirous
of assisting where possible, but I just don't see an issue. It
sucks that he had to go through the hassle of police intervention, and
I'm not negating that, but this issue appears to have resolved itself
at post one. Stick a fork in it and move on.
