Lots of binoculars out there in this price range. 8x40's are birding
binoculars that work for astronomy.
I like Roof prism binos for a few reasons:
1. Most are O-ring sealed and nitrogen purged so the eyepieces don't fog up
easily.
2. I think they are more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time.
3. Most have around 20 mm of eyerelief, providing a nice "easy view."
4. As a general purpose binocular and for birds in particular, roof prims
binoculars generally have better close focus than porros.
As far as finding some decent Roof prism binoculars for under $150, I am not
sure about that one.
As far as the Orion Scenix go, I have a pair of Scenix 10x50's. They are
decent but short of eye relief and the stars are noticeably not sharp outside
the center of the field of view. But they are nicely made.
I suggest cruising around www.eagleoptics.com, lots of binos at good prices and
they are quite good I hear about returns.
And while you are there, check out the lifetime warranty on the Platinum
Rangers.... Fully transferable, only proof of ownship required is the
binoculars themselves, and if the problem is your fault, (dropped or whatever)
they will repair or replace for $20..
