I think that you've listed the most likely reasons for people getting in and
getting back out. I've introduced dozens of people to astronomy over the
years, literally dozens. And I can only think of one that is still with
it!!

I know of a couple that "just don't get it" (their words). "What's the big
deal about looking at all those fuzzy things that all look the same !??" (I
guess one has to be curious about the world around them).

Many have other developed other commitments, lots don't like the solitary
nature of astronomy.

I've been at it for 45 years, at my own pace of course, and I must admit
that there are times I ask myself why am I doing this?
But, I'm still here!

I enjoy it, try to pass it on and once in a rare while, it takes.
