Agreed, analyzing human vision on theoretical grounds alone is fraught with
peril. My sky background is within one mag/arcsec^2 of the darkest anywhere, so
background isn't a big limitation. But the air is unsteady, and the degree of
scintillation makes a large difference in how deep I can see. That fact is
seldom accounted for in theoretical discussions.
