viewing galaxies

First off, thanks to everyone who helped with the filter and barlow
question. I appreciate the help. Great advice for viewing nebula and
planets. However, I'm trying to push my scope (8 inch newt using a 24mm
panoptic televue) to it's limits and see galaxies as clearly as
possible. (So far just dusty smudges that I can only really see by
looking away.) Any ideas on what filter's or barlows I should look at
specifically for viewing galaxies?
