Well, I wouldn't put it exactly that way. A beginner can certainly
make good use of an 8-inch SCT; it would make lots of sense if you
were really sure that's what you wanted to end up with, and if you
didn't mind spending the money. But it's a rare beginner who knows
enough to make that kind of determination.

You know, it's not so much a matter of changing as of getting an
additional telescope. Most serious stargazers own at least two scopes.

That's a fine scope, but if you think you might be buying an 8-inch
SCT later, a 5-inch SCT isn't a very good complement to it. It just
has too many things in common -- long cooldown time, relatively
narrow field of view, and fairly pricey. In my opinion, a small
reflector or refractor complements an 8-inch SCT much better --
and would also make a better scope for a child.
