A couple of things to consider:
1. In 1996 the death rate due to heart disease in the US was 276/100,000. At
that rate, about 750,000 people die each year due to heart disease.
2. Most cycling deaths are due to factors like riding at night without lights,
riding on the wrong side of the road, preventable and things the
prudent/experienced cyclist does not do.
3. A few years ago Failure Analysis Associates did a study and concluded that
on a hourly basis, cycling is about twice as safe as motoring. This would mean
that on a per mile basis it is no more than twice as dangerous.
4. The roads are to be shared.
5. I consider bicycling to and from work high points of each day. My commute
is a thing of joy and pleasure, rather than frustration and stress....
