Uncle Bob,
I haven't done this experiment with the Moon, but one year I made a 6" mask
for my wife's 14.5" f/6 equatorial Newt and spent a couple of night viewing
Saturn and Jupiter with and without the mask. With the mask I found the
views often looked a bit "nicer," but I could never see more with the mask
than I could at full aperture. There were often moments to minutes where it
was steady enough to take some advantage of the extra aperture (although it
was always certainly seeing limited). I also appreciated the larger exit
pupil with the full aperture, and the brighter image provided a more
colorful view. The mask went in the wastebasket.
It certainly is a cheap and easy experiment to do, and no one has to rely on
someone else to decide if a mask is going to be useful in their observing.
Clear skies, Alan
