You'll get better advice at your local astronomy club. Better because
you'll actually have a chance to see and use the various scopes. Your
local telescope shop is a good place to start too.
You can read tons of information and opinions but the real clincher is
seeing the equipment in person. Size, weight and portability far
outweigh any other considerations when buying a first telescope.
If you stay clear from camera and audio gear shops selling telescopes
as a sideline, you'll do fine.
