You get paid to work. People pay McDonald's for (presumably drinkable)
coffee. I have no idea how much the settlement was for, but if the
coffee was too hot to drink (I understand the tongue can handle hotter
stuff than much of our skin), the plaintiff is entitled to some sort of
compensation. Punitive damages aren't entirely unreasonable, either.
Presumably if you had been a visitor to your work area, and you got
splattered with 400-degree oil, they would not have given you a "Get
back to work." They would have braced for a lawsuit. You might not
have sued, of course, but you would have had a perfectly good case.
