There are folks who enjoy that sort of thing. What's a waste of time for
you, or some other person, is enjoyable to other folks. Someone might even
learn something by undertaking such a project, or go on to become the
supplier of Schupmann's for the amateur.

I'm glad a gentleman named Roland Christen decided he had to make his own
scope so he could get a telescope with better photographic abilities. Look
what that lead to. I think you may find that a lot of folks making optics
and telescopes for us amateurs started out as amateurs - amateurs who
weren't content to sit on their duff and let someone else make equipment.
Do you remember David Kreige's articles in Telescope Making about making Big
Dobs? What did that lead to?
