Although I firmly believe there is no better alternative for beginners
than getting out to a star party, maybe it's about time this kind of
scope was made available through department stores too? People will
continue to buy telescopes from such places - why not give them a better
selection to choose from?

I think even an inexperienced punter can tell a better-made instrument
from a "junk" scope (to use a somewhat controversial term). Coupled with
the general consesus of "bigger is better" and that one gets what one
pays for, I think the scale would be, more often than not, tipped
in favour of the better quality products.

Maybe I'm crediting the average consumer with more than average common
sense, but I know that in similar situations I'm usually prepared to pay
a little more for something of better quality when given the choice.
