7-10x binoculars are fairly managable without a mount.
Just bring a lawn chair or blanket out with you.
Even Wally World 7x50s will allow you to see hundreds of
night sky targets. You'll have plenty of time to sink more
money into this after you've learned your way around.
Hook-up with an astronomy club in your area.
Starparties are a great place to preview and learn about different
binoculars, mounts, and scopes.
