Depends on the size Compact Flash Card you buy. They come in memory sizes up to
1 GB and at speeds up to 80X. I just bought the Nikon D70--the other top
contender in the $1K price range DSLR--and I'll be able to fit about 144 JPEGs
on a 512 MB CFC.

Nope, but you can use other devices. Peripheral card readers are cheap; we're
talkin' less than $20. Remove the card from you camera, plug it into the card
reader and write the images to your hard drive, CD, DVD...wherever.
You may already know this, but the Digital Rebel (aka 300D), doesn't have
mirror lock-up as a standard feature. However, there's a reliable hack that's
been floating round the Web for about a year that will unlock some of the
higher features. Mirror lock-up is among them. Using the hack does void the
warranty.
You're gonna love the Digital Rebel. I chose the D70 mostly out of brand
loyalty. Both offer incredible versatility and value for the money.
