I obviously agree with those who stress first getting family and pets
out safely, but we'll assume they're out in the front yard watching the
flames. While I use my binoculars much more often than my scope, I'd
have to say I'd save my old C8 even if it weren't more expensive. I had
it before I had my kids, and they looked through it when they were
young. My daughter saw Halley's Comet through it. It's been a fixture
in my life for almost 30 years, and it's on it's way to becoming a
family heirloom. Eyepieces? I'll cheat and take the 4 lowest power,
since they're already in the turret. A book? That gets really hard.
Maybe my Menzel's Peterson's Field Guide, since that's the one I used to
learn the sky.
This all assumes that I'd leave other old stuff behind that I
treasure... family pictures, my grandfather's derby, my father's
childhood .22 rifle, my mother's toy Toonerville Trolley...
