As Don Lancaster explains on tinaja.com, you need a patent to make
a LOT of money (he says at least 12 million dollars) for it to be
worth doing (not for getting a patent passed, that's a pittance - this
is for attorney money to defend it).
Patents are only profitable for larger companies. I used to work
for a large company. Patents # 5,815,558, # 5,982,862 and $3.75 (or is
it $4.50 now?) will get me a fancy cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I only have the three-book set "Amateur Telescope Making", another
book or two titled "How to make your own Telescope" and the CD with
all the Scientific American "Amateur Scientist" columns. I figure I
might grind my own mirror someday.

Again, check out Lancaster's site. They'll check how much you've
got to back your patent, and if it's not eight-digit money and THEY
can make big bucks on it, they'll just infringe and fight any lawsuits
you start.

There's an interesting description under Editorial Reviews here:

Ouch, I'm not even that bad, at least not on this newsgroup, at
least not yet...
