I deciced to call Canon's tech support, and put it to them. They don't
think it's a problem, but do suggest that it be turned off when changing
lenses. The reason is that one is making and breaking electrical contacts
between the camera and lens. It sounds to me like one need not worry either
way, and and my friend's colleague might find his difficulty arose for
other reasons. User's choice.
