Nulling interferometry is the main reason. If you offset the two wave
fronts half a wave the light form the two paths will cancel. But, it
will only cancel the light of the star allowing you to directly image a
protoplanetary disk or possibly large planet. That is why the mirrors
need such a close tolerance any imperfection will not cancel its
counterpart.
