Thanks very much to those who kindly responded.

Much as I like the (loads of) extra space the new flat screen is
giving me compared with my old 19" AOC (flat) CRT I'm not completely
happy with the sharpness of this Acer.

I've been adjusting the settings all over the place but still haven't
found a happy medium between sharpness and text size.
My AOC CRT was superb despite being well within the "budget" price
range. I never had eye strain or headaches despite spending far too
many hours using it every day for over three years.
So I may take advantage of the very consumer-friendly return laws over
here and return the flat screen as faulty.
