Thanks, I'll print it out and study it carefully.

I have decided to keep the LCD monitor. A bit of digging around in XP
found a variable DPI scale under Display>Settings>Advanced>Custom that
I didn't even know existed. I was able to use that to enlarge the text
to an optimum size when backed off to Medium using View>Text size in
IE.

At 1280 x 1024 the images are vibrant and colurful. A bit like colour
slides or stained glass and perfectly ample for my limited needs.

So now I'm a happy bunny and my screen is now very comfortable and
legible in use.
