The Canon CMOS sensors are less noisy than CCD detectors- at room
temperature. So these cameras can be reasonably used for exposures up to
several minutes. So far, however, a cooled CCD camera is the lowest
noise solution available.
Cooling a camera is expensive. It requires care in the mechanical design
to avoid stressing the fragile cooler while getting good thermal
coupling between the detector and cold side, and the heat dissipator and
hot side. It also requires a well sealed, dry chamber for the detector
to prevent dew and frost.
