Is there a little rectangular plate on the rear of the rear cell that says
Multicoated Silver Optics Group? The Meade LX-3's were offered with (or
without) this option. Because of the problems that arose with them, they
dropped this option in later scopes...
If your scope is tagged MCSOG, chances are the silver coatings on the
secondary are failing, and the silver is tarnishing, as has been the case
for most or all of those scopes.
For the original owners, there was a lifetime warranty. But for folks who
bought them second or third hand from someone else, there is not. The
warranty is for original owners.
So you will have to send the scope back to Meade to have the optics
replaced (rather than just recoat the secondary, which is part of a
matched set - they replace the optics outright) at your cost. Or, if you
are more adventuresome, you could pull the scope apart and send the
secondary to a coater for stripping and recoating... If you decide on the
latter option, understand that, because the optics ARE a matched set,
orientation relative to each other is critical. So you will want to be
very careful during disassembly to ensure that you mark (or that they
pieces are ALREADY marked to show the proper relationship) them so you can
put them back together properly. Failure to do so will effect image
quality.
A final thought. Because these scopes were built during the Halley era,
the rush to get tons of scopes built overwhelmed quality control efforts,
so many of these scopes had substandard quality optics by today's
standards. So the option of sending the scope to Meade for optics
replacement would likely be money well spent, since today's optics are
consistently of overall higher quality than those of the Halley era...
I speak as the original owner of a 10" Meade LX-3 (since converted to an
LX-5) with MCSOG... And when MY optics were replaced, the new set was
clearly superior to the original optics...
